10 Family Fun Winter Activities

25 January, 2023 by KatBp 22 Comments

I know how hard it can be in winter to find something to do. The weather gets cold and you don’t always feel like going outside. My family enjoys our time outdoors, so when it’s cold out, we usually bundle up and get outdoors. There doesn’t always seem like a whole lot to do when it comes to being outdoors when it’s so cold out and there is snow everywhere. Sometimes even I find it hard to get outdoors when it’s cold out. I honestly am not a big fan of the cold weather. I don’t mind winter and the snow, it’s just being cold isn’t something I love. Winter can be amazing though. It looks so beautiful outside when the snow is covering all the trees. I’ve listed some fun activities that you can enjoy during winter.

Fun Winter Activities

Sledding

I find sledding to be a must in winter. This is one of our favorite outdoor activities when there is enough snow. We have plenty of areas around to go sledding. My daughters even love to go sledding in our very own backyard. Right now we have a big snow hill that they have been sledding on. We had a lot of snow so far this winter, so the snow really built up and we ended up with a nice hill of snow. My daughters get outside to go sledding very often this time of year. It’s so much fun too. Even I get out there with them and sled. It’s such a fun activity for the whole family.

Skiing or Snowboarding

If you know how to ski or snowboard, this is a great activity. You’ll get in a lot of exercise this way as well. Even if you don’t know how, you can always learn how. I learned how to ski when I was in school many years back. We went to this place that everyone could ski or snowboard at, and it was so much fun. I actually enjoy skiing a lot. I can’t wait to start teaching my own kids how to ski too. I think they’re going to love it. I haven’t learned how to snowboard yet though, but that is something I do want to try out soon.

Build a Snowman

Building a snowman is a must. This is something my daughters do every year. If there is snow, then you have to build a snowman. It’s just something we always do. My daughters made their own snowman this year, and I’m sure they’ll be making more. Sometimes I’ll help out with the snowman, but for the most part, they love making them on their own. I always give them some items to use so that they can put a face on him as well. We always deal with whatever we have at home, which always turns out nice.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is always a lot of fun, especially when you go with friends and family. We actually have an ice skating rink in our town, so we are able to go whenever we’d like. There are a lot of ice skating areas in other cities around us that are actually outside as well. I’m sure if you check around your area, you’ll be able to find a nice rink that you can go to. I remember ice skating a lot as a child, and I loved it. I’m glad I’m able to share this with my daughters as well.

Snowball Fight

Winter wouldn’t be winter without a snowball fight, right?! Every year when the snow starts to fall, we always pick some snow up and start throwing it. Just be careful when you do a snowball fight so that you’re not hurting anyone. Sometimes we’ll take snowballs and just aim them at things like trees instead of throwing them at other people as well. We do love throwing them at others though because it’s so much fun this way, and it gets everyone up and moving. Our family enjoys doing this each year.

Hot Chocolate & Smores

You have to have some smores and hot chocolate or apple cider by a fire. This is another activity we love each winter. You can just sit by the fire and have a nice hot drink along with some smores. Nothing beats this when it’s cold outside. All the kids always enjoy making their smores and eating them too. It will keep everyone nice and toasty to sit by a fire as well. Of course the hot drinks always warm you up too. The smores are just a great treat as well.

Tubing

Tubing is a lot of fun. We have a place near us that you can go tubing at. You won’t even have to walk up the hills this way either. They have a ski lift that will bring you up the hill so that you can tube down it. The kids love going here because the hills are amazing and they don’t have to walk so much up hill. Walking up hill takes a lot of energy, even I get tired after awhile. It’s nice to have places where you can go tubing and get lifted up to the hill instead of walking. This gives you more time to tube too!

Horse Sleigh Rides

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is probably one of my favorite things to do in winter. I love to walk, so going snowshoeing is perfect for me. Each year our town usually has snowshoes available for everyone so that they can go down a trail. You can put these snowshoes on and start going down the trail as far as you’d like, or you can always turn back if it gets to be to far for you. My daughters and I have done this before, and we love it. It’s a great way to get some good exercise as well.

Explore Ice Caves

This is another one of my favorite activities. My family and I will sometimes check out some ice caves, or for use they are usually called Ice Castles. Everything is made out of ice, and it’s so neat to look at. Sometimes they even have slides made from ice that you can slide down. They are always such a fun thing to see. I try to go each year if I’m able. It’s just so much fun to be able to see how all this ice was made and how beautiful it looks after.

If you’re finding yourself not knowing what to do this winter, I hope that these activities will give you some ideas. Just because winter is cold, doesn’t mean you can’t still go outside and have some fun. Get out with your family and enjoy the snow while it lasts. There is a lot to be able to enjoy in winter too.

I’m not sure I could deal with so much cold. We don’t get snow here so none of these are an option unless we go to the mountains.

We love winter, but not the biggest fans of the cold either. It’s fun to get out in the snow though.

It rarely snows in Texas so we don’t have a lot of these activities. I wish! It did snow a few times and we built snowmen.

All of this sounds like fun. I’m constantly telling my Canadian friend how I wish we could have as many snow days as they do.

Snowball fights are fun, They do get you moving because you don’t want that snow inside of your coat. Snow fluff knows no boundaries, lolol
