5 Blunders To Avoid When Buying New Bathroom Fixtures

Updating your bathroom fixtures can breathe new life into the space and make it more functional and stylish. However, it’s easy to make mistakes that lead to regret, extra costs or even safety issues. Whether you’re swapping out a showerhead or a toilet, make sure to avoid these common blunders.

1. Getting the measurements wrong

One of the biggest slip-ups is not checking dimensions before you buy. You don’t want to end up stuck with a bathtub that’s too large to fit in your bathroom. At the same time, you don’t want it to be smaller than you’d hoped. Measure every space twice (height, width and depth) and consider plumbing locations. Factor in clearance for doors and drawers too. Also consider how you’re getting fixtures into your home – you may need to measure corridors, doorways and staircases to make sure it’s feasible to move in fixtures.

2. Prioritizing price over quality

It’s tempting to grab the cheapest option, but skimping on quality can often backfire. You don’t want to end up with fixtures that easily scratch, corrode or stain. By investing money into durable solutions, you can be sure that your bathroom will look good for years to come. Read reviews and consider whether fixtures come with warranties – a 5 to 10 year guarantee is a sign that a manufacturer trusts the quality of their product. Also consider brand reputation (this Which guide to the best and worst brands is worth checking out).

3. Improperly installing them yourself

If you’re not a professional plumber, you might want to think twice before putting your DIY skills to the test. Poorly installed bathroom fixtures may lead to issues like leaks or even total collapse. A professional plumber will make sure that everything is level, secure and code compliant. Many bathroom fixture retailers will be able to organize professional installers for you, so you don’t even have to look for plumbers yourself. You may have to pay an extra installation fee, but it’s worth it if you’re not confident. If you’re certain about installing fixtures yourself, make sure to look up installation guides online.

4. Not considering how to dispose of old fixtures

You’ve ordered a new sink and bath – but what about your old sink and tub? Fixtures need to be disposed of properly. Most of us don’t know how to do this and don’t have a vehicle large enough to transport fixtures away. So that you’re not left with an old bathtub or sink in your garage, consider organizing professional removal services such as The Junkluggers to take away these items. Some bathroom stores may be able to arrange professionals to take away fixtures for you for an added fee alongside installation.

5. Overlooking future needs

A large freestanding bathtub might seem like a fun feature to treat yourself with right now, but is it going to be a practical choice in years to come? If you’re nearing retirement age, consider the risk of future mobility issues – you might find such a tub too hard to get in and out of. Features like walk-in showers and high toilets are better practical choices as you get older and can still be incorporated in ways that feel luxurious rather than senior-friendly (you don’t have to worry about grab bars right now).
