5 Tips for Saving Money On Your Next Grocery Shopping

13 February, 2024 by KatBp 14 Comments

In 2022, U.S. consumers spent more than 11% of their disposable income on groceries, a significant portion of monthly spending on groceries alone. However, with the rising inflation and cost of living over the past two years, food costs are now even higher in 2024. Learning some tips for saving money with every grocery shopping trip to the retail store is now more critical. Below, we will share tips to help you save money on your next grocery shopping.

Buy Online

Online shopping is the new trend as more grocery and retail stores open up to the idea. All you need to do is generate a digital list of the groceries you want, and an attendant will pack all the items for you. The retail stores sometimes deliver these items at an extra cost, or you could have them delivered by a separate delivery company of choice.

You can choose the ideal delivery company by searching for the best delivery apps on your Android or Apple stores. At the very least, you can save money with grocery delivery apps as they offer remarkable discounts and free deliveries within the first few weeks of subscription. So, make the best choices to minimize online spending while optimizing your grocery shopping experience.

Try New Meals and Ingredients

While it’s important to always stick to what you’re used to and maintain your original shopping list, you might not always get everything you want. You can always substitute some items on your grocery list for cheaper and available ones if they’re too expensive or out of stock.

You can go for generic products instead of name-brand ones that still serve the same purpose, albeit with a slight disparity in quality standards. Also, if you’re shopping for category products, you can swap with other items rather than sticking to the one you wanted. For instance, if you’re shopping for white meat, you can substitute your favorite unavailable parts with other chicken parts or alternative white meats like fish.

Compare Prices

Whether you’re shopping online or at your local grocery stores, it’s important to compare the prices of your favorite items before making a purchase. Consider shopping at two to three stores while comparing the prices of your top grocery items. You can then settle on the store with the lowest average price and most of what you need on your regular list.

The process is much easier if you’re shopping online. All you need to do is browse the different online stores and check their prices and offers for your favorite items.

Go for Items on Sale

Most grocery stores and supermarkets often run numerous promotions to woo customers into buying more targeted items at discounted prices. If you take the time to look through the shelves keenly, you could find most of your grocery items on promotion. This can help save significant money from your usual grocery budget.

Stick to Your List

Having a grocery list is crucial for cost-effective shopping. However, if you lack the discipline to stick to your list, you’ll always spend more than you budgeted for. You can minimize incidences that trigger impulse buying, such as tagging along with others when shopping or shopping on an empty stomach.

These tips should easily get you on track with grocery spending, especially now that commodity prices keep rising daily. With effective planning and discipline, you can always rest assured that your grocery budget won’t eat deep into your income.

Thank you for these tips. I hate how expensive groceries are these days. I try to only shop for things when on sale or if I have a coupon.

I never really thought about the impact of trying new meals and ingredients as a way to save money, but it makes so much sense. It’s easy to get stuck in a routine with the same items every week, which can really limit the savings.

I like shopping for groceries online whenever possible. It keeps me from buying so many impulse buys. I also like shopping at Aldi’s, using Ibotta and fetch, and coupons whenever there are some available.
