Ocean in a Jar

5 May, 2016 by KatBp 60 Comments

It’s so exciting that Spring is here. Summer is right around the corner as well. With it starting to get nicer out, I wanted to create something that was along the lines of Spring/Summer and also dealt with the ocean. My husband, kids and I are hoping to one day see the ocean.

With mason jars being such a big thing lately, I wanted to create and ocean in a jar. This is such a simple project and you won’t need to many items to make one of these.

What you will need:

  • Rocks
  • Plastic Sea Creatures/Plants or any other sea item you want to use
  • Water
  • Blue Food Coloring
  • Glitter
  • Mason Jar

How to make it:

First you’re going to want to put some rocks on the bottom of the jar. I use a smaller mason jar, but you can decide on the size you’d like to use. You can use aquarium rocks or you can use rocks from outside. I went out in my driveway and found some rocks to use for this. Then you can simple put the water, glitter and blue food dye in it. Make sure to mix that all up.

Next you can simple put all the sea creatures, plants or whatever else you’d like to put in your jar. You could put them in before you do the water, but I find it easier to put them in after putting the water in. I think they sit nicer when you do it this way. If you pour the water in after doing the creatures, your stuff might move around more. Make sure to keep a towel close by because you will get water and glitter on your hands.

Now you’ve got yourself an ocean in a jar! Once you make your very own, where are you thinking about putting it?

That is such a clever idea. I have so many mason jars and my kids have so many little toys all over that they could create their own world.

Hopefully you will get to see the ocean one day, I grew up near one and the smell of the saltwater growing up was definitely a favorite way to relax. I love how your jar turned out, I might have to create one of these for myself when I am getting a bit homesick.
