It’s week 2 of Camp Warner Bros. I hope you all are excited for each week. This week we have the movie Steven Universe: The Movie and a fun experiment to go along with it. We will be making crystal gem candy. This is a fun experiment that we will be doing, but make sure there is an adult around to help out.
About Steven Universe: The Movie:
After so many harrowing adventures, Steven and the Gems are ready to celebrate how far they’ve come with a movie musical! Little do they know they’re about to face their worst enemy yet.
If any of you have seen the t.v. series of this show, I’m sure you’re going to love the movie too. I love watching the movie versions of t.v. shows too. This was a fun one to see with my kids. They’ve seen some of the episodes of the show, so I knew they would enjoy the movie too. It was the perfect movie to watch with our crystal gem candy too!
The Science Behind The Fun:
As time passes (and the solution cools), the water will slowly evaporate from the solution. As the water evaporates, the solution will become more saturated with sugar. The sugar molecules will collect on the string, and the candy crystals will grow molecule by molecule!
Lets make some crystal gem candy!
One of the first things we did, was get our water and sugar going on the stove. We boiled the water and then cup by cup we poured in the sugar and stirred it til it all dissolved.
Once all the sugar is dissolved, you want to wait about ten minutes before pouring the mixture in the jars. Once you get the mixture in the jars, you’ll want to choose your food coloring and put that in the jars and mix it up.
We were very excited to see how the colors turned out. My kids chose blue and orange, and they were great colors to choose. The lighter colors like orange are going to be easier to see though. Blue was a bit harder to see once the crystals started to form.
Make sure you have your string tied to a pencil and paperclip, then you can put that inside the jar. If you want, you can wet the string and roll it in the sugar. That way it can help start the process faster. That’s what we decided to do too.
After about 4-6 hours you should start to see the crystals forming. It can take a while to really get them growing though, so you have to be patient.
My daughters and I had a lot of fun with this. I would definitely recommend helping out your children with this one because of the hot sugar water. The adults should be pouring that in the jars so that the kids won’t get hurt. This was certainly a fun experiment to do with my kids. We’ll be doing more of this too. We really enjoyed it.
Steven Universe: The Movie is now available to own on Digital, Blu-ray & DVD! Make sure to get your own copy.
