I have been wanting to learn tufting for some time now. I always thought it looked fun the way others would be able to make their own rugs and such. It seemed like it would be a fun project to make. My youngest daughter really wanted to make some rugs as well. We knew it would probably take some time before we got it right, but we also know it would be a fun project to work on together and get to learn how to make our very own rugs. Who knows, maybe someday we can create them and sell them! It’s always fun doing crafting projects, especially when it comes to doing them with your kids.

My youngest daughter and I were especially excited to give tufting a try. My daughter actually didn’t need much of my help setting it up at all. She is fourteen, and she put this frame together all by herself. She did a wonderful job. We did forget to adjust it and get the sides tightened at first, but after we did that, it was so much easier to work with. Don’t forget to have all the sides tightened, because that really does make a world of difference.
My daughter really wanted to try to make a smiley face, but personally, I don’t recommend doing this until you know what you’re doing. I recommend just practicing on the fabric at first. She had a hard time with this at first since we were both new to the whole tufting process. We ended up just doing straight lines and such to start practicing off with first. Trying to go around the curved lines was a bit difficult at first, which is why I’d say to start off with something simple, like a straight line until you get the hang of it.
We had a bit of troubles at first figuring out how to get everything tightened up, but eventually, we figured it out. I have to say, if you don’t have it all tight, it’s going to be so much harder to work with. We had already started running out of fabric, and my daughter was using this without it being tightened, which was really difficult, and it wasn’t working right. I know we have to get some more fabric now so that we can have that nice and tight for us to make some rugs and such.
If you look at the bottom versus the top, (pictured above) you’ll see a big difference. This is why I think practicing is a great idea. The yarn at the bottom isn’t done correctly, but at the top, it is. You can see how much tighter it is at the top, and that is the way you want it to look.
Once we started to get the hang of it, it was going really well, and a lot of fun too. Once you know what you’re doing, you can really get in to this and make some beautiful pieces. We are still working on practicing a bit though, but soon enough we’re going to start making a rug. I know my daughter is so excited, and can’t wait to see what her very first rug will turn out to look like. I’m excited for her to start making them as well. I’ll be letting her make one first, and then I’m sure I’ll be right there next making one. I just know they’re going to turn out amazing.
Using the tufting gun is actually very simple. Once you have your fabric nice and tight, you just put the tufting gun up to the fabric, and away you go. Of course you want to make sure your yarn is threaded as well, but that is so simple as well. This tufting gun is engineered for safety. The enclosed design guards against accidental snags, hair entanglement, and mishaps. With automatic standby mode, it’s ready to go when you are.
If you’re looking to do some tufting, this kit from Clawlab has been absolutely amazing for us, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as well. Whether you’re a beginning or not, it’s a great kit overall. There is a lot to learn yet, but we are so excited!
