Crackle Eggs

This Crackle Egg recipe is inspired by the movie The Adventures of Jurassic Pet 2: The Lost Secret.

The first thing you’re going to want to do, is get your eggs hard boiled. I personally love using my instant pot to boil eggs. It’s fast and easy this way, and I love it. I have this silicone egg tray that sits right inside my instant pot. Mine can make 9 eggs at a time, but you can use as many eggs as you’re wanting to do.

Once your eggs are hard boiled, let them sit until they are all the way cooled down. Once they’re cooled down, you can grab a spoon and start using it to make the crackle effect on the egg. To do this, you just lightly tap on the egg to crack it. Keep doing this until you have it cracked the way you’d like. Just be careful not to crack it to much. You want small cracks to make the egg have the crackle effect.

You should get a nice crackle on all your eggs. Just be sure not to crack them to hard or you may not get the effect you’re looking for. A light tap is all it takes to get them looking nice and cracked.

Now you want to get some food color gel (or just food coloring), cups and vinegar. You’ll want to fill the cups up with about one cup of water. I started out with four eggs. I filled all the cups up with about one cup of water. Then you can add about 1 tsp of vinegar. Then drop your eggs in. You’ll want to let them sit in the fridge for about four hours or just leave them overnight. I prefer to just leave them in the fridge overnight, that way they get the best coloring.

Once you have let them sit enough, you can take them out of the fridge. You should have beautifully colored eggs now. I love using the food gel because I think it creates a darker color, which I love for this recipe. The darker colors will show up more than lighter colors.

Now all you have to do is peel your eggs and you should get the crackle egg effect! I love doing these around Easter time as well. It is a fun thing to do with the kids. My daughters and I love dying eggs for Easter, and this is a great way to make them have a fun effect. We all love how they turn out.

Don’t forget to pick up a copy of The Adventures of Jurassic Pet 2: The Lost Secret, which is now on DVD and digital. You can also order it off AMAZON if you’d like. This is such a fun recipe to go along with the movie. I wanted to make these eggs especially for the movie because they remind me of dinosaur eggs. Easter is coming up as well, so they’d make for some great dyed Easter eggs too. It’s a fun way to make them with the family. Get everyone together for some Easter fun.

Crackle Eggs

Ingredients

  • 4 Eggs
  • 4 Cups Water
  • 4 tsp. Vinegar
  • Food Coloring Gel

Instructions

  • The first thing you'll want to do is get your eggs ready to be hard boiled. You can do this however you want. I prefer to use my instant pot. If you're using an instant pot, you can put about 2 cups of water in there and set your eggs inside. I like to use a silicon egg tray inside for my eggs to sit on. Then you can use the manual button and cook for 4 minutes.
  • Once your eggs are done, let them sit out until they have cooled off completely. You don't want them warm or hot when you're going to be handling them.
  • Once they have cooled off completely, you can get the water ready. Get four cups and put a cup of water in each of the cups.
  • Then you can add in the food coloring. I love to use food coloring gel just because I think it works best at keeping the eggs dyed a darker color. Use as much or as little as you'd like. I usually just put a small amount inside.
  • Now you can also add in the vinegar to each cup. You'll want to use about 1 tsp of vinegar in each cup.
  • Then you can put them inside your fridge for at least four hours or overnight. I think overnight works best because it lets the eggs sit longer and get that beautiful color you're looking for.
  • Once they have sat long enough, take them out of the fridge and start peeling off the shell. Now you should have that beautiful crackle effect!
