How To Make Breastfeeding Easier: 6 Tips For New Mothers

15 August, 2023 by KatBp 26 Comments

Welcoming a new baby into your life is a joyful and transformative experience, but it also comes with a fair share of challenges. One of the most crucial aspects of caring for your newborn is breastfeeding. While breastfeeding is a natural process, it can be a bit overwhelming for new mothers. However, with the right information, you can make the journey of breastfeeding much smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your baby.

Practice Proper Latch and Positioning

Achieving a proper latch and positioning is key to successful breastfeeding. Ensure that your baby’s mouth covers a large portion of the areola, not just the nipple. This not only helps prevent nipple soreness but also ensures your baby gets an adequate milk supply. Hold your baby close to your body, with their head aligned with their body, and support their neck and shoulders.

Create a Comfortable Environment

Ensure you choose a quiet and comfortable spot for breastfeeding. You could use pillows to support your back and arms, ensuring you’re in a relaxed position. Dim the lights and have some water, snacks, and a book or your phone nearby to keep you comfortable during longer feeding sessions.

Prioritize Breast Care

Taking care of your breasts is essential for successful breastfeeding. Make sure your breasts are clean and dry between feedings. Another pro tip would be to apply lanolin cream or breast milk to soothe sore nipples. If you experience any pain, consult a lactation consultant or a healthcare provider for guidance.

Pump and Store Milk

Taking care of a newborn is taxing, and you will definitely need time to rest. Luckily, you can invest in a high-quality breastfeeding pump, which will help ensure a steady supply of breast milk for your baby, even when you are away.

Remember, breast milk is rich in essential nutrients and antibodies that support a baby’s growth, immune system, and overall health. Using a good pump to express breast milk will allow you stimulate milk production plus you will continue to provide these nutritional benefits to the baby even when you aren’t physically present.

Breastfeed on Demand

Newborns have irregular feeding patterns, and they often signal when they’re hungry. Therefore, it would be wise to watch for hunger cues like rooting, hand-to-mouth movements, and increased alertness. Feeding on demand ensures your baby gets the nourishment they need and helps establish a healthy milk supply.

Stay Hydrated and Well-Nourished

Breastfeeding can be dehydrating, so it’s crucial to drink plenty of water throughout the day. As you hydrate, ensure you consume a balanced diet rich in nutrients to support your own health and milk production. Don’t forget to include foods like whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables in your meals.

Wrapping up

Breastfeeding is a learning process for both you and your baby, especially as a first time mother.  It’s okay to face challenges along the way. Stay patient, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. In addition, it would be wise to trust your instincts as a mother and make adjustments based on your baby’s cues and needs. That said, don’t forget that every baby is unique, and what works for one may not work for another.

These are spot-on tips. I think my biggest problem with breastfeeding was my husband who was concerned about what others thought while I fed the baby in public.

Right. I don’t think anyone should even have to think that either.

I wish someone would have told me it wouldn’t hurt for long like it does when you first start. I persevered, but it would have been nice to know the initial hurt wasn’t going to be there for long.

I breastfed all of my kids. I was a stay at home mom for my first two. My third I had to go back to work but I did pump so that he could still get breastmilk. I loved breastfeeding.
