An Interview With Robert Murphy-Texan BBQ Cookbook

12 January, 2017 by KatBp 44 Comments

Today I have a special guest joining me. His name is Robert Murphy and he’s the author of the A Smokin’ Good Cookbook. You may also know him from Australia’s My Kitchen Rules and Aussie BBQ Heroes. Robert Murphy is most recognized for his hunger-inducing recipes that he debuted with his daughter Lynzey on “My Kitchen Rules” where he shared with the world his brand of Texan cooking. He has now turned his innate passion for authentic Texas cuisine and turned it into a career with this niche recipe book that shares his barbecuing expertise through his hearty recipes.

Texas native, Robert Murphy was born and raised in Breckenridge, TX and spent his younger years adventuring the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and cooking his own food; all stories which you can find in his latest book. He attended college in Texas and post graduation worked as a cattle rancher, horse trainer, and oilfield worker before relocating to Australia with his wife, where he has raised a family of four children. Though his love of the outdoors is boundless, Murphy changed pace when he appeared on television series, “My Kitchen Rules” alongside his daughter and kicked off his career in the kitchen.

TEXAN BBQ includes 80 authentic Texas-style barbecue recipes for meat lovers around the world, some of which have even been handed down from Murphy’s cattle-ranching ancestors. Inside the book you will find tasty recipes including luscious ribs, juicy steaks, and tender briskets, with a variety of side dishes, and an explanatory chapter outlining different BBQ methods that can be used, from pits, to coals, to woods, to the quick and easy gas/electric barbecue.

I was able to interview Robert, so you’ll find all my questions and his answers below!

  1. Have you always loved to cook?

I started cooking outside at a very young age 7-8 yrs old, mostly wild game. One of our neighbors was an older man named Floyd and he cooked on an open fire. I learned a lot from watching him. I still love to cook outdoors.

2. Describe your cookbook. What should readers expect?

My cookbook is mostly recipes from my childhood and beyond with some great photos. The recipes are in a user-friendly format; you can BBQ or use the oven with most of them.

3. Do you have a favorite recipe from your cookbook?

Everyone loves my chicken ribs. These start from a chicken specialty cut. With some good old Texas gravy they’re hard to beat.

4. Did you have any challenges while writing this cookbook?

Sitting at a desk and typing for that many hours is very tough for me but the end result was so worth it.

5. Do you have a favorite meat that you love to barbecue?

Brisket is the most fun because it takes so long and can be tricky under some conditions. I also love to cook venison.

6. Do you have any tips for anyone while cooking on the grill?

Be safe., and get other people involved. Feed your guests straight from the grill.

7. Do you have any advice to someone who may want to write their own cookbook?

Start to get your recipes in a format that is metric and imperial to make it easy on you and the reader.

8. Do you have any favorite ingredients that you cook with?

Kosher salt, brings the flavor out in everything and is not too strong.

9. How long did it take you to write your cookbook?

Gathering recipes took many years. The actual writing could be measured in days and hours.

I hope that you’ll all check out his cookbook. It looks like it has some amazing recipes in it! I love having food cooked on a grill, so this cookbook is a must for me.

I need to snag a copy of this book! I have an older BBQ cookbook but the recipes are so outdated. Robert Murphy sounds like he enjoys a great BBQ so I think I would find a lot of recipes that would go well with our family.

Love this interview. Texans are known for their BBQ and being rather direct with their words. I’ll have to keep this book in mind when I get ready for BBQ season.
