This is a guest post.
In the past an invite to a black-tie event meant, after panicking about what to wear, choosing formal attire and dressing to impress. In short, a floor-length gown with your best jewelry. However, the dress code for black tie events has become a little more relaxed in recent years.
That means you have more options but it can be harder to know which outfit to choose. In general, you will look the part if you select a ball gown, (regardless of its style), a formal cocktail dress, or even a smart suit.
You should note that if you are choosing a floor-length dress it is important that the hem just grazes the ground. This is long enough to look like it fits properly but not so long that you will keep stepping on it and risk falling over.
You can get some great inspiration for black tie dresses here and, best of all, it is even possible to rent them. That means you can get a dress far more expensive than you may be able to afford and then simply return it after the event.
The dress doesn’t have to reach the floor. But, showing too much skin is never a good idea on these occasions. That is why it is best to choose a mid-to-full length dress. Equally, a midi should have a drawn-in waist and a full skirt, this will give a stunning look and enhance your silhouette.
Choosing The Color
The good news is that you don’t need to wear black to a black-tie event. The title is a reference to the formality of the occasion as opposed to the color of the dress.
However, before you grab your favorite party dress you should note that any dress should either be one color or have floral prints. This means you can wear a colorful dress and be as bright and bold as you like. The secret is to ensure that the dress is elegant and doesn’t expose too much flesh. This is a black-tie event, not a red carpet extravaganza.
Of course, you will also need to accessorize. That means shoes, make-up, and a bag that coordinates with your dress. Alongside this, you should never overdo the jewelry and it should match your dress, no matter how colorful it is.
Don’t forget, while colors are acceptable, the brighter the color the more attention you will attract. You have to be prepared for this.
The Right Fabric
Alongside the color and style of the dress, you should also consider what fabric it is made of. As black tie events tend to be more formal it is best to choose a rich fabric, such as silk, satin, lace, or even chiffon.
The same rules apply if you choose to go with a pantsuit. These are acceptable but still need to be one color, properly accessorized, and avoid showing too much flesh. You can then focus on enjoying the occasion without feeling self-conscious.
