Is your HVAC System Acting Up? Here’s What to Check and When to Call the Pros

31 May, 2024 by KatBp 8 Comments

No matter whether you live in Seattle or anywhere else when your HVAC system starts acting up, it can feel like your home is losing its heart. The comforting warmth in winter and refreshing coolness in summer are essential for comfort and peace.

But how do you know if the problem is something you can fix or if it’s time to call in the professionals? Don’t worry; we are here! By understanding these signs and taking prompt action, you can ensure your family stays happy and cozy all year round.

This article will help you through common HVAC issues, perform simple checks, and recognize when expert help is needed. Let’s get started!

Common Signs Your HVAC System is Acting Up

Here are some common signs that indicate your system might be experiencing issues:

  • Unusual Noises: Banging, clicking, or humming sounds. This could indicate loose parts or motor issues.
  • Inconsistent Temperatures: Uneven heating or cooling across rooms.Possible thermostat issues or duct problems.
  • Weak Airflow: This may be due to clogged filters or duct obstructions.
  • Strange Odors: It could signal mold or electrical problems.
  • High Energy Bills: A sudden increase in energy costs.

Basic Checks You Can Do Yourself

Here are some basic checks you can perform on your system yourself:

  • Check the Thermostat: Verify correct settings and replace batteries if necessary.
  • Inspect Air Filters: Clean or replace dirty filters regularly for optimal air quality.
  • Examine the Outdoor Unit: Clear debris around the unit and inspect for visible damage.
  • Look at Ductwork: Seal minor leaks and inspect for any damage that may affect airflow.
  • Monitor the Circuit Breaker: Check for tripped breakers and reset if needed for an uninterrupted power supply.

When to Call the Professionals

HVAC systems are complex, and there are certain situations where it’s best to call in a professional technician. But before knowing ‘when,’ it’s important to know what to look for considering the pros.

Start by researching an established business. If you are in Seattle, look for businesses like Seattle Air Superior – Trusted Seattle HVAC Company Since 2006 for many reasons. A years-long company provides you with service satisfaction, quality, and reliability.

Also, consider choosing a company that offers regular maintenance plans. This can help keep your system running efficiently year-round. Here are some instances when you should seek the expertise of a professional:

Persistent Issues

If noises, temperature inconsistencies, or weak airflow continue after your checks, it’s time for a professional. Persistent issues often mean a deeper problem that needs expert attention.

Electrical Problems

Frequent breaker trips and burnt smells are red flags. Electrical issues can be dangerous. DIY fixes here can lead to serious hazards. Expects can check and repair electrical faults safely.

Major Component Failures

Examples include compressor issues and blower motor failure. These are complex parts, and trying to fix them yourself can cause more damage. Professional technicians can accurately diagnose and repair major components.

System Age and Replacement

If your system is over 10-15 years old and frequently breaks down, it might be time for a replacement. A professional can assess your system’s condition and recommend the best course of action. New systems are more efficient and can save you money in the long run.

Frequent Cycling

Does your system turn on and off more often than it should? This is called short cycling. It can be caused by various issues, from a faulty thermostat to an oversized unit. A professional can diagnose and fix the problem.

Inconsistent Temperatures

Is one room in your home too hot while another is too cold? This could mean there’s an issue with your HVAC system. It might be a problem with your ductwork or a failing component. An expert can balance the system and restore comfort to your home.

Low Airflow

Persistent weak airflow might be due to a failing blower or duct issues. A professional can inspect and repair or replace the necessary components to restore proper airflow.

Thermostat Issues

If your thermostat is unresponsive or inaccurate, it’s best to call a professional. They can recalibrate or replace it to ensure your system operates correctly.

Maintenance

Even if everything seems fine, regular maintenance is crucial. A professional can perform a thorough check, clean components, and ensure your system is running efficiently. This can extend the life of your system and prevent unexpected breakdowns.

Conclusion

Your HVAC system is crucial for home comfort. Recognizing the signs of trouble and knowing what you can fix yourself versus when to call a professional can save you time and money. Don’t wait for small issues to become big problems. Regular maintenance with professional help will ensure your system keeps you comfortable for years to come.

I need to do a check up on ours. Last year it stopped working during the summer, and it was pretty miserable.

That must have been miserable for sure. I’d hate for that to happen to anyone.

This is good info to know. Our HVAC had troubles a couple of years ago but since it was over 20 years, we replaced it with a new one.
