Kid Friendly Activities for Summer

3 May, 2017 by KatBp 66 Comments

Are you looking for some fun activities for your kids this summer? Here are some great activities to do with your children this summer.

School is almost out for most students, and it may be out for some of you already. My daughters go to school til June 2nd, so that’s less than a month away. With them being home for a few months, I have to think of some ways to keep them busy. I know kids can become bored very easily too. This is why I’ve come up with a list of some fun ideas that your kids may enjoy. My daughters love them all, so I hope your kids will too.

  1. Play at the park. Most have local parks nearby they can bring the kids too. My girls always have fun at parks.
  2. Bubbles. We always have bubbles during the summer. It’s one of my kids favorites.
  3. Have a lemonade stand. My girls and I have already done this and it’s been fun!
  4. Treasure Hunt. This is another one of my girls favorites. We always hide something and have a treasure hunt. We have clues to help find the treasure. This is always a lot of fun.
  5. Have a picnic. You can do this right in your backyard or go to a park and have a picnic.
  6. Go camping. My girls haven’t been able to enjoy this yet. This is on my list of things to do this summer with my girls. I want to take them camping at least once this summer.
  7. Go swimming. Swimming is always a great way to keep cool and the kids love it.
  8. Set up a tent in your backyard. My girls love this one. They could play in it for hours during summer.
  9. Water balloon fight. This is another one my kids really enjoy.
  10. Go to the library. Most libraries have an area for kids to play in too. Ours has a lot of neat things my girls love to play with. They enjoy sitting down and reading while they’re there as well. A lot of the times they have free events too!
  11. Take a walk. Kids love to see everything outdoors. My girls and I usually search for rocks while we’re walking.
  12. Go bike riding. If you have a biking trail, that would be even better.
  13. Go to the beach if you have one nearby.
  14. Plant a garden. This can keep everyone busy for hours. We’re going to be doing this during the summer. My girls love picking veggies from the garden. We also plant all kinds of fruits. This year we’ll have blueberries, raspberries, grapes and hopefully an apple and pear tree too!
  15. Play with chalk outdoors. Kids love to write with chalk.
  16. Visit an amusement park or a water park. This will surely brighten up your kids day!
  17. Paint. My kids love to paint, so this is always fun for them.
  18. Have a puppet show. You can easily make some sock puppets or make them from paper bags.
  19. Visit a museum. They have lots of things to see at museums.
  20. Go fishing. This is a fun one to do with kids. My girls love to go fishing.
  21. Bake. My kids love to help me out in the kitchen. If your kids do as well, make a day of baking with them.
  22. Have fun in the sprinkler. If you don’t have a sprinkler, they don’t cost much. You can find many different kinds of sprinklers around all kinds of stores.
  23. Have a game night. Kids love to play games!
  24. Have a family movie night. I know my kids love to sit down and watch movies with my husband and I. That or you can take them out to see a movie.
  25. Make a fort. My kids love this. We usually make forts out of boxes or tables, chairs and blankets. It’s always fun!
  26. Volunteer at an animals shelter. My daughters love animals, so they always have fun when we stop by our local animal shelter and visit with the animals.
  27. Go bowling. This is another one on our list of things to do this summer. My kids love to go bowling.
  28. Sign up for those free building shops, like Lowes or Home Depot.
  29. Visit a fair. There are always fairs going on during summer.
  30. Go roller skating. My girls went last year for the first time and they had a blast.
  31. Sign up for local library reading programs. I don’t know if your library does this, but ours has a reading program during the summer for kids. They get some prices for books they read during the summer.
  32. Camp out in your own backyard and roast marshmallows and have s’mores!
  33. Catch bugs. See what types of bugs you can catch. Check for fireflies at night. Those are always neat to catch in a jar at night.
  34. Do some puzzles. We have a lot of puzzles at our house, and my girls enjoy doing those.
  35. Go to the zoo. This one is on our list for the summer. We’re going to go in June right after they get out of school.
  36. Make your own popsicles. We do this every year, and my girls love being able to make their own popsicles.
  37. Fly a kite. You can make your own or buy one from the store. When it’s a windy day, go out and fly your kites.
  38. Create an obstacle course. Whenever my husbands grandmother comes to visit, she always does obstacle courses with my girls. They love it!
  39. Water gun fight. Get some water guns and let your kids spray everyone. Always lots of fun!
  40. Slip n slide. Either make your own or buy one. You can use tarp to make your own.
  41. Make a bird house. You can make these out of popsicle sticks.
  42. Make a bird feeder. One of the popular ones to do, is to take pinecones and put peanut butter on them. Then you roll them in bird seed. Birds will love this.
  43. Plant flowers. We love picking out flowers and planting them around the house. This is a great way for kids to be able to pick out some flowers of their own too.
  44. Tie dye shirts. I remember doing this as a child and I loved it. This is something my girls have been wanting to do.
  45. Collect rocks. You can always find rocks anywhere.
  46. Go to a farmers market. Kids will enjoy being able to pick out their own items at the farmers market.
  47. Check out flea markets. These are always a lot of fun. They have so much stuff to look at.
  48. Go to garage sales or have your own sale. Kids love to find new things at garage sales. My girls love having their own sale as well. They love to see what people will buy.
  49. Write a book. Your kids can make their own books with some paper. My daughters have done this in school and they loved it.
  50. Visit family. My kids love it when we go spend some time with family. It gets them out somewhere else and they will have others to play with.

I hope that you will all enjoy this list of activities. I know we have a long list of fun activities to do this summer. I hope this helps you find some more activities to do with your kids too! Which ones are you thinking of doing with your kids this summer?

I want to have a treasure hunt with the grandkids this summer. They had a lemonade stand and made about $180 give or take. It was a great learning experience for them and they’re on pins and needles to have one this year as well. But guess who has to make all that lemonade lol. I’m going to try quite a few of your activity suggestions this year.

A couple things I want to add to this list:
Library events – many libraries have actual kid friendly events, not just during the summer but year round on specific days.
Recreation center events – many community recreation centers host events for kids during the summer that are absolutely free
In store events – places like Home Depot, Michael’s (the arts and craft store), Toys R Us, LEGO Store, and Lakeshore Learning host free events that will give your child a chance to do something creative, socialize with other kids, and hang out in the air conditioning this summer as well

Wow, that is a great list of activities! The kids in our area do not get out of school until the end of June so they have a bit of time til they can start enjoying the summer activities. It doesn’t help that tonight’s low is 37 degrees to make it feel even longer.
