Park It Don’t Lose It: Keeping Your Motorcycle Safe When It’s Stored On Public Roads

20 March, 2026 by KatBp Leave a Comment

There are plenty of perks to owning a motorcycle. Nothing beats cruising with the wind in your hair, the sun on your skin, and the undeniable thrum of adrenaline coursing through your body. With a motorcycle, even a trip to the shop can feel like an adventure, rather than a bland daily necessity. Unfortunately, motorcycles are also at an increased risk of theft and the financial fallout that comes with it, especially if you’re parking in public spaces.

Of course, precautions like finding extensive motorcycle insurance online can help to put your mind at ease a little, as it provides replacement coverage if your bike is stolen. But, you’ll still want to avoid the stress wherever possible, which is why we’ve got some top tips for keeping your motorcycle safe even when it’s parked out in the open.

# 1 – Take Safety Precautions

If you simply rest your bike on its stand and walk off when you’re parked on a public road, then there’s exactly 0% chance that it’ll still be there when you come back. Motorcycles are already easy pickings for most thieves who won’t need to worry about door locks or complex steering systems. To avoid making their lives even easier, you need to put a few dedicated safety precautions in place.

Your bike will most likely have an alarm of its own, and that’s a good first step, but you need to reinforce this with a handful of additional safety elements. At the very least, you’ll want to chain your bike to a nearby immovable object like a tree or lamppost. You can also invest in dedicated safety features like wheel locks, which are preinstalled and ready to provide protection whenever you need it.

# 2 – Park in Well-Lit Spaces

For the sake of safety, you might fall into the trap of parking your motorcycle in hidden corners or down dark alleyways. We get the logic, but remember that this hidden parking also makes it easier for thieves to run off with your bike unnoticed.

It’s actually far easier to protect your vehicle if you park out in the open, ideally on brightly lit streets that experience heavy footfall. That way, opportunistic thieves won’t have any way of actually sneaking your bike out of sight without drawing unwanted attention, and probably being stopped in the process.

# 3 – Install a Tracker

Even your best efforts can’t prevent theft in all cases. This is why insurance is so essential, but sometimes, a bike might hold value that you can’t just replace.

In this instance, you’ll want the tools to locate your bike after theft. Preinstalled trackers are undeniably the best way to do that. Not only will a GPS tracker alert you if your bike is taken, but it can also help you follow its location from your mobile. That way, you can help the police narrow their search and increase the chances of finding your bike safe and sound.

Park it, don’t lose it, when you protect your motorcycle on public roads in these essential ways.
