The Dominican Republic is the epitome of a Caribbean paradise, and Punta Cana is the jewel in its crown. Flung out on the easternmost corner of the island, this gorgeous spot is one of the most well-known and well-visited towns in the country, and it deserves every morsel of its fame. It is a truly magical, dream of a place, with over twenty miles of pristine beaches, a range of stunning luxury hotels, and crystal-clear turquoise waters just begging to be explored.
But while it might boast some of the best Caribbean beaches going, Punta Cana is not just about lounging by the sea and enjoying the surf. It boasts a fascinating cultural scene, with some great museums and restaurants, as well as fantastic national parks and adventure tourism, and amazing wildlife and scenery right on the doorstep.
So if you are lucky enough to find yourself in this little slice of paradise, check out some of the best things to do in Punta Cana below.
Scape Park
The scenery, landscape, and topography of the Dominican Republic are some of its most interesting and exciting features, so the natural, ecological theme park of Scape Park is a must. Walk along limestone cliffs and through verdant jungle, and discover crystal-clear, mysterious sinkholes known as cenotes. These swimming holes are a picturesque way to literally dive beneath the earth of Punta Cana and a surreal and unique experience. If your tastes tend towards the adrenaline-filled, try one of the many zip lines that take you soaring above the jungle canopy!
Macao Beach
Punta Cana’s public beach, and also one of the best stretches of sand in the country, Macao Beach is a popular choice for locals and tourists alike. Stunning white sand fringed by swaying palms and turquoise water make it a gorgeous spot, and it is easy to see why UNESCO described it as one of the Caribbean’s best beaches. If you aren’t a fan of crowds, avoid Sundays as it is an extremely popular choice for residents of Punta Cana.
ChocoMuseo
What’s not to love about a museum of chocolate?! This fun, quirky cultural center is a homage to all things chocolate, with a ‘bean to bar’ factory where you’ll discover everything there is to know about the chocolate-making process, and the chance to attend a hands-on workshop to make your own. Best of all, it’s free!
