Scott Patterson of Gilmore Girls and Now Scotty P’s Big Mug Coffee

25 February, 2019 by KatBp 38 Comments

Many of you may know Scott Patterson from Gilmore Girls. It was one of my favorite shows growing up. I can still remember watching this show with my sisters and mother. It was an all time favorite of ours. His character on the show was Luke Danes, and personally he was one of my favorite characters on the show. He was the owner of “Luke’s Diner” in Stars Hollow. He was always well-known for his coffee on the show. The show did end up coming to and end, but Scott actually now owns his own coffee line! It’s called Scotty P’s Big Mug Coffee.

For those of you who enjoy having a cup of coffee, you must give Scotty P’s Big Mug Coffee a try if you haven’t yet. It’s amazing! Certainly a must try for all! He’s got a few different kinds of coffee to choose from too. I love that they even sell coffee mugs!

I was also lucky enough to do an interview to catch up with Scott.

Interview:

1. Many people know you from being Luke on Gilmore Girls. What was it like playing on the show?

Having a regular job on a TV series is a double-edged sword; on the one hand you have steady work at a high rate of compensation and a chance to get global exposure. You also get to form relationships with the studio and network people and that, for me, was the best part. I took away a lot of great friendships that thrive to this day. On the other hand it gets to be a bit of a grind with the “rinse/repeat” nature of series television so the challenge is to keep it real and fresh in an acting sense as regards your approach to the work. That’s key. A lot of actors vanish from the scene after a long run on a tv series because they are suffering from burn out and need a break. I did two more series after GG that each lasted one year so I did nine consecutive years of series tv, about 200 episodes. That’s a lot, and in 2011 I was exhausted. Acting is hard and it requires a very high level of concentration, 14-18 hours a day. During filming you never feel like you can get enough rest or get ahead of the work in terms of preparation because the scripts come in last-minute. Very high stress situation so you had better have a work ethic or you will get buried.

When I first started studying acting in New York I was a theatre geek and mapped out my life doing theatre year round. It wasn’t about money or fame. It was about exploring characters and plays that spur the imagination, that inspire and inform. It’s a fascinating process, really. Once I acquired the technique and skill set to plumb the depths of character then it was pure wonder and fun. You are operating in a heightened level of consciousness and accessing, unlocking secrets of the human psyche – not to sound pretentious. The joy, excitement and terror of workshopping ‘Hamlet’ was the best acting experience of my life, bar none, and my one regret was not being able to take it to the stage and actually perform it before an audience. Any actor worth his or her salt needs to study this role, among many others Shakespeare has to offer. Shakespeare will be the best teach you ever have.
Another thing I observed while working in series TV is people tend to get swallowed up and lose themselves in the process. It becomes a power trip for them and they can’t let go of it. It’s like an addiction to them, like “who can I run over today”. They become non-collaborative  and guarded and that can adversely effect a set. It can be subtle or overt but either way it gnaws away at everyone’s process.
The pure joy of GG was working with the old pros who made the job fun. Michael Winters, Sally Struthers, Liz Torres, Sean Gunn, Ted Rooney, Melissa Mcarthy, Yanic, Todd Lowe, etc. These folks were not only unsung for their considerable contributions to the show but a delight to be around on and off the set. They never took themselves too seriously and let their work speaks for itself. I miss them all and the good times we had. The fact that none of these people were ever mentioned in awards buzz is ridiculous and unjust because they all brought the heat, so to speak. Trust me, there are more great actors deserving of their own shows than spots available.

2. You now have your own line of Scotty P‘s Big Mug Coffee. What was it that got you in to making your own line?
The desire to own my own business coupled with the fact that I was pissed off that I couldn’t get a decent cup of coffee at a reasonable price. My line of coffees are high quality, unique in that they are smooth and rich and drink-all-day, and affordable. I saw a problem to solve in the marketplace and I solved it.

3. What are some of your best and worst experiences with being on Gilmore Girls as well as having your own line of coffee?
Best GG experience – getting the 6 year contract after being hired only as a guest star on the pilot. Worst – finding out we were canceled while I was on set in Toronto filming a movie. My manager called. It wasn’t a good day.

4. Besides having your own line, do you have any other hobbies you enjoy?
I have a 4-year-old son now and he occupies my free time for the most part. It’s the best decision I ever made and had I known the magic a child brings daily then I would have done it sooner. You can’t know until you have your own. As far as hobbies go, I try to ski as much as possible in winter. It’s my meditation. My son started skiing this winter and he’s already shredding. Proud papa am I. I used to write a lot of music and even record it but it’s all about the coffee business now.  I collect rare books and love hunting them down. It can get very expensive, so I’m a looker over being a buyer most of the time. The thrill of finding a rare copy of ‘A Season In Hell’ is indescribable. That is another form of meditation for me but having a child and running a company pretty much takes up all one’s time, as you know.

5. Do you have any more plans for Scotty P‘s Big Mug Coffee? Any new products coming soon?

Wow, I love how candid he was about the truths of acting. Too many people try to sugar coat things. He was really honest–loved him in Gilmore Girls!
