Social Emotional Learning With The Imagine Neighborhood

Have your kids ever been scared or got angry? Maybe they have gone to the babysitters for the first time and they get nervous or scared, or maybe even for school for the first time. My kids were both a bit scared and nervous the first time they went to school. Maybe they have got angry and wanted to smash something. There are plenty of ways to help kids out when they deal with certain situations. You want to try to remain calm when they need some extra help too. The Imagine Neighborhood has some great podcasts that can help children with certain situations.

What is Social Emotional Learning?

Social-emotional learning (or SEL) is sometimes called emotional intelligence or people skills. SEL helps people build their empathy and relationship skills and manage big emotions. Having strong social-emotional skills help kids and their grown-ups communicate better, manage their conflicts, and solve problems together.

How does the show work?

No one gives a toddler a book and expects them to immediately know how to read. Reading is a skill that’s taught.  The same is true with skills like sharing, making friends, or empathizing with someone else’s feelings. In the Imagine Neighborhood, we use stories, music, and activities to help kids and their grown-ups develop these skills. And we give grown-ups extra tools, like activities and conversation starters, that match the topic of each show’s story.

Podcasts

I was able to listen to some of these podcasts with my children. I think it’s great to have the adults listen along with the children. That way they are getting a better understanding of what is being said, and you are there to help listen if they have any questions too. There is a lot they can learn from listening to them. Kids are able to talk about what they’re feeling. With what’s going on with the world right now, these podcasts are great. Kids are able to talk about what they’re feeling with what’s going on around the world. I think now is the perfect time for them to listen to them. That way they can talk to you about how it all makes them feel.

They Teach Kids a Lot

There are many different podcasts, so you can check out which ones may be more useful to you. I enjoyed all the ones we listed to. They had a lot of great information for both kids and adults. It made it a lot of fun for kids to listen too as well. They have different characters in there to make it more entertaining for the children. It’s great to really get them listening. I know a lot of us are stuck at home right now too, so this could be a great time to get your kids to listen while they’re already home. It can keep them busy while learning some new things too.

Each of these podcasts are about 15 minutes long and they use stories to help describe an important Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skill, such as learning what to do if you’re angry or scared. These are extremely helpful for kids. I really enjoyed listening to them all, and so did my kids. My oldest daughter gets upset over things a lot, so these were really helpful for her. She doesn’t really know the best way to keep calm when she gets upset over something. These have been great to help her learn how to deal and not get mad about things, and just to relax and calm down and ask for help.

The Clouds are Made of Cake!

One of our favorites was, The Clouds are Made of Cake! This one was all about excitement. Sometimes kids can get really excited, but sometimes a bit to excited. In this podcast, the neighborhood’s grown-ups make a cake mistake so exciting that they run wild. Only Scotty’s pal Doctor Apocalypso can save the grown-ups from themselves (and the dump) by helping them calm down. In this episode, they’ll talk about feeling excited as well as calming down. We know it feels great to be excited, but sometimes it’s really important to calm down too. When the neighborhood grown-ups get stuck in the gabage, Doctor Apocalypso helps them escape by teaching them to calm down using belly breaths.

What’s really wonderful about The Imagine Neighborhood, is that they are FREE and have no advertisements. You can find them on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and Stitcher, or anywhere podcasts are found.

Most parents don’t realize that kids need to learn how to control their emotions. I don’t think my parents even thought about it. So I had no clue with my first two kids, granted I focused on teaching them how to be kind to others, have manners, and still enjoy life. But my youngest, I’m trying to teach him how to have a healthy emotional health so that he is a great husband and father to his kids.
