Stress Management Strategies for Flight Crews Dealing with Long Hours

14 April, 2023 by KatBp 28 Comments

Do you work as a flight crew member? If so, you know that long hours and stress go hand in hand. It can be difficult to manage your stress while on the job, but it is important to do everything you can to stay healthy and focused.

In this blog post, we will discuss some stress management strategies that can help you deal with long hours and keep your head straight!

1. Eat well

Eating a healthy diet is an important part of managing stress for flight crews who may be dealing with long hours. Consuming whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins ensures that our bodies are getting the vitamins and minerals they need to help us cope with the physical and mental demands of flying.

Also, having healthy snacks throughout the day can help combat fatigue, so it’s a good idea to have foods like nuts and trail mix on hand when you can’t get a full meal. With these dietary choices backing up your hard work, you have a better chance of handling your job without burning out.

2. Rest well

Resting well during off hours can be particularly important to flight crews due to the highly demanding nature of their job. Flight attendants often deal with long days, fluctuating schedules, fast-paced environments, and constant contact with different people—all of which can increase stress levels and make it hard to recover between flights.

But a proper night’s rest or a few hours of restorative, uninterrupted sleep during off hours can make all the difference. Whether you sleep in a real bed or a flight crew crash pad is up to you, but those hours are precious so don’t miss them! Visit Hotel Engine to learn more about the pros and cons of crash pads.

Getting ample rest can provide more energy, help improve concentration and focus during flights, sharpen decision making skills, reduce fatigue, boost mental wellbeing and performance, and generally better equip you for the challenges ahead.

3. Exercise when you can

Long hours and irregular schedules can take a toll on anyone, especially flight crews. Exercise is a great way to manage stress levels while also promoting overall physical and mental wellbeing. It’s important for flight crews to find time to fit in some activity when possible.

Even low-impact activities like walking or simple stretching can help improve energy levels and increase alertness – both things that are vital for those dealing with long hours in the air.

Regular exercise has also been proven to reduce the feeling of stress over time, making it an effective way for flight attendants to deal with their unique challenges.

This dentist who does  Invisalign and dental veneers in Las Vegas also recommends visiting your doctors regularly in addition to exercising. At the very least, you should have regular checks with a physician and a dentist.

4. Manage your self-talk

Positive self-talk can be a helpful tool for flight crews who are dealing with long days, as it allows them to focus on the positive and reframe stress in a constructive way. For example, if a crew is feeling overwhelmed by the task at hand, they can use positive language to remind themselves of their abilities and create motivation.

In addition to that, using kind words towards themselves can help flight crews maintain morale when they may feel fatigued or overworked. What’s more, recognizing the successes small and large helps to boost morale and prevent fatigue from piling up during longer shifts.

A few strategic reminders throughout the shift such as “I’ve got this!”, “I’m strong enough to do this” or even “We’re almost there!” can help flight crews stay engaged while building resilience and reducing stress levels in the cabin environment.

5. Journaling and mindfulness

Journaling can be a great way to debrief after long flights and make sense of the myriad of emotions that can come up during the work day. Flight crews often have to juggle multiple responsibilities, so writing down their thoughts can help them make sense of it all and release any pent-up stress.

Also, practicing mindfulness during off hours can help flight crews stay grounded, relaxed, and free of stress. From simple breathing exercises to guided meditation, mindfulness activities provide a much-needed buffer between flight crew members and their long days in the air.

Taking the time to practice these activities can give them the peace they need to rest well, stay positive, and be ready for every new challenge that arises.

Conclusion

As a flight crew member, taking care of yourself is essential for both physical and mental wellbeing. With the right strategies such as prioritizing sleep, exercise, positive self-talk and mindfulness activities during off hours, flight attendants can manage stress levels more effectively and stay at their best during long shifts.

I can imagine this would be tough. I always try to be polite to flight crews because I don’t know how long they’ve been flying and the passengers they’ve had to deal with.

I couldn’t image working in that industry. The hours, the travel and all of the irate people you have to deal with. I would imagine their stress levels are off the charts.
