5 Things To Think About Before Buying A Horse

9 June, 2026 by KatBp Leave a Comment

Anyone who loves horses will tell you that it’s very easy to fall in love with the idea of owning another one. After all, what’s one more horse, right? The reality is that while horses are incredible animals, they’re also a huge responsibility. Whether you’re buying a horse for showing, riding lessons, competitions, or simply because you enjoy spending time with them, there are a few things you should think about before taking the plunge.

They Are A Long Term Commitment

Buying a horse isn’t something you can do on a whim. Horses can live for 25 years or more, which means you’re making a commitment that could last decades. Unlike many hobbies that you can put on hold for a few weeks, horses need daily care no matter what’s happening in your life. Holidays, bad weather, family events, and busy work schedules don’t change that. Before buying a horse, it’s important to be realistic about whether you have the time and support available to provide proper care every single day.

You Need To Be Financially Prepared

It’s not just the purchase price you need to think about. Horses come with ongoing costs that can quickly add up. Feed, bedding, farrier visits, vet bills, insurance, equipment, and stable maintenance all need to be factored into your budget. Then there are the unexpected costs that nobody really plans for. If a horse becomes ill or injured, bills can mount up surprisingly quickly. Make sure you’ve properly worked out what ownership will cost before bringing a horse home.

Don’t Undersell Yourself

If your goal is to make money from your horse through riding lessons, competitions, breeding, or leasing opportunities, don’t be tempted to undersell your services. Many horse owners make the mistake of charging too little because they’re worried about competition. The problem is that horses are expensive to keep, and those costs don’t disappear just because you’re trying to attract customers. Make sure your pricing reflects the value you’re providing and covers the ongoing care of your horse.

Think About Transport

One thing many people forget about when buying a horse is how they’re actually going to move it around. Whether you’re attending competitions, travelling to events, visiting a vet, or relocating yards, transport becomes incredibly important. Looking at reliable horse trailer sales before you need one can save you a lot of stress later. It’s one of those things that often gets overlooked until the moment you suddenly need it. Having a safe and reliable way to transport your horse can make life much easier in the long run.

Build A Presence Online

If you’re planning to use your horse as part of a business, social media can be one of your best marketing tools. Horse lovers can happily spend hours scrolling through photos and videos of horses, so don’t be afraid to share your own content. Show off your horse’s personality, progress, training, and achievements. Not only does this help attract potential customers, but it’s also a great way to connect with other people in the equestrian community. Besides, there’s really no such thing as too many horse photos.
