7 Factors To Consider When Shopping For An SUV

SUVs are one of the most popular types of car in today’s market. With so many makes and models to choose from, shopping for an SUV can often feel overwhelming. Below are 7 factors to consider to help you single out the perfect vehicle for your needs.

Size

SUVs range in size from compact crossovers to giant models like the Chevrolet Suburban. Bigger SUVs will typically have more cargo space and legroom, while smaller ones are easier to maneuver in tight spaces (useful in cities). Determine what is better for you: having lots of interior space for road trips or being able to park in smaller gaps and negotiate narrower roads more easily.

Fuel efficiency

Gas mileage varies widely between models. Some SUVs are not very fuel efficient at all, making them less ideal if you need to drive a lot and are on a tight budget. Others are very fuel efficient – particularly plug-in hybrids like the Kia Sportage. There are also several fully electric SUVs that you can buy – these have a lower range and you’ll need to find time to charge them, but are more environmentally friendly and will save you a lot of money compared to a petrol or diesel car.

Safety

Next, look into safety ratings. Prioritize models with strong crash-test scores from the IIHS and NHTSA, and look out for advanced driver aids like AED (automatic emergency braking) and blind-spot monitoring. Examples of SUVs that are renowned for their safety include the Mazda CX-80 and Volvo EX90.

Interior features

Some SUVs have very luxurious and tech-heavy interiors, while others have quite rugged interiors. It might be worth looking for a GMC Acadia for sale near you if you’re looking for a spacious interior with a choice of trims. If you want something a bit more skeletal and less delicate, a car like the Land Rover Defender might be preferable.

Off-road capability

Looking to try some off-roading? Models like the Jeep Wrangler are designed for this thanks to a 4×4 drivetrain, heavy duty solid axles and plenty of ground clearance. Crossovers like the Honda CR-V are meanwhile solely designed for on-road use – take them off the tarmac and they’ll quickly get damaged.

Reliability

Reliability is important to research into when buying any car. Newer cars are generally a safer choice than older used cars, but you also have no idea whether a newer model is going to be prone to widespread issues in the future. Consider brands that have strong warranties and a good track record to avoid future headaches.

Cost

Finally, think about how much you are willing to spend. Brand new SUVs typically enter the market around the $30,000 mark, but there are models that are much cheaper like the Chevrolet Trax and Nissan Kicks. Older used SUVs will cost much less to buy, but you’re likely to spend more on repairs. Buying from a private seller will also get you a better deal, however dealerships are more likely to offer a warranty.
