4 Common Windshield Mistakes To Avoid

13 May, 2026 by KatBp Leave a Comment

Of all the parts of a vehicle, it’s usually the windshield that is most frequently overlooked by drivers. It not only plays a vital role in the structural integrity of the car, but it also directly impacts the driving experience. While it might not have the same status as the under-the-hood parts or even, in some cases, the infotainment system, there’s no doubt that the windshield deserves as much TLC as the rest of the vehicle.

Happily, keeping your windshield in check doesn’t require too much time or effort. Mostly, it comes down to avoiding the all too common windshield mistakes that drivers commit. We’ve put together a list of some of the more frequently seen errors, which can help make sure that you don’t commit them yourself.

Ignoring Small Cracks

It’s easy to put off fixing a small crack in a windshield. After all, if it still feels firmly in place and it’s not in the direct line of sight, then there’s a strong temptation to simply carry on driving rather than making an effort to fix it.

But here’s the thing: while a crack might start small, over time it’ll likely develop into a much more serious problem. At that point, the only option may be to repair the entire windshield. Fixing small cracks when they appear isn’t just safer, but also a lot better for your wallet.

Trying to Fix The Problem Yourself

It’s not just about making the effort to fix a windshield crack that’s important. How it’s repaired matters, too. It can be tempting to use DIY windshield crack repair kits, but it’s important to remember what those kits are designed for. They’re generally meant as temporary fixes for non-serious cracks, such as very small chips that are located out of the line of sight. If the chip is any bigger than that, then you’ll need to look up ‘windshield replacement near me’ to fix the issue professionally. That’ll ensure that your windshield is fixed properly at the first time of asking, which helps to save money in the long run.

Selecting the Wrong Wipers

Drivers rarely think about their windshields, but they virtually never think about their windshield wipers until they hear squeaking. But even before the noise arrives, wipers can have a negative impact on the windshield if they’re not the right size or style. While they won’t cause the windshield to be damaged immediately, they can cause micro-scratches that can lead to damage if left untreated, resulting in the windshield having to be replaced earlier.

Using Hot Air or Water On a Frozen Windshield

Finally, if there’s one all-important windshield mistake to avoid, it’s trying to defrost it too quickly by using hot air or water when it’s cold. That can cause thermal shock, prompting an already weakened windshield to crack. In fact, it can be so damaging that even new, structurally sound windshields can experience problems. The best approach is to turn on the car and slowly heat the glass using a low temperature.
