Like so many other things in life, dental hygiene follows the rule: prevention is far better than the
cure. Advancements have been rapid in the last few decades, but that doesn’t mean that you should sit back and let your dentists do all the work. There is plenty you can do to help keep your teeth happy and healthy. Here are three simple things to think about to help improve your oral hygiene.
Brush Twice A Day
While it may seem like obvious advice, there are still so many people who do not follow this rule. Even those that do brush twice a day may not be doing so in the right way. It’s important to consult a reliable dentist, to get some advice when you need it, as well as prompt treatment – especially if you require multiple teeth implants. Whatever type of toothbrush you are using, you should replace it at least once every three months so that you don’t lose performance over time. Also, don’t brush too soon after eating as your mouth will be more acidic and the enamel on your teeth will be temporarily softer. You should always try to wait 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth. Make sure to use a fluoride toothpaste as this will offer the best level of protection. You can also brush your tongue to get rid of any food particles or bacteria that gets stuck there and is at risk of being transferred onto your teeth.
Floss Daily
Flossing is also important as it helps to remove any food, debris, plaque and bacteria lodged in your teeth, but many people do not take the time to do this. If you have not flossed before, this may cause your gums to bleed but you should not let this deter you as this should stop after a few days. If it doesn’t, you should consult a dentist as soon as possible. Good dental hygiene begins with a combination of both brushing and flossing. You can also consider using a fluoride mouthwash which will help the fluoride reach all areas of your teeth and offer maximum protection.
Cut Down on Sugar and Other Unhealthy Products
This is a difficult one in a modern world where sugar is everywhere, but it is absolutely essential for good dental hygiene. Try to start by cutting back on sugary soft drinks and fruit juices and drink water instead. Also think about some of the other parts of your diet in which you can limit your sugar intake. This is not only better for your teeth, but for your whole body in general. Cigarettes are another thing to avoid as they significantly increase your risk of getting gum disease or mouth cancers. Similarly, alcohol can damage the enamel on your teeth and increase your risk of tooth decay. Even if you decide not to quit altogether, cutting back can have a big impact on your oral health and general wellbeing.
