How to protect your elderly as they age?

12 January, 2023 by KatBp 20 Comments

As children who have now become grown and working adults, it’s an experience to see our parents aging right in front of our eyes. Slowly, the people who were once strong and guided us by holding our hand start to slow down, needing to catch their breath. Watching our parents grow old is a rite of passage, but now is our time to look after them. This may require an array of assistance to retain their lifestyle and comfort. If you live with your parents in Atlanta, this may be easier to do, but if you have a family of your own or are working away from them, a few additional steps will help you take care of them. All your parents require is for their finances to be in order, their health checkups to be done on time, and peace of mind in their later stages. Today, this blog will help you ensure these things by taking four simple steps. Let’s get right into it.

  • Help them manage their money: Once retirement arrives, the earnings of your parents come to a halt. If they invested in a sound pension plan and are enrolled in the Government’s senior citizen benefit programs, they may still have an active inflow of cash to help them take care of their monthly upkeep and expenses. However, if you think they could get better returns through portfolio diversification, get in touch with a financial advisor to help them get better returns. If your parents haven’t retired yet but don’t have adequate investments to help them with their retirement expenses, set up a fund for them.

  • Get their property elderly optimized: There are several things that change once people start to age. For example, they turn more fragile than before, and simple tasks like climbing stools to reach the top of cabinets may be a painful experience. Instead of expecting the elderly to adapt to their existing infrastructure, restructure the interiors in a way that helps them make things easier. From countertops within reachable range, to enhanced home security systems, get these optimizations done.

  • Set up health insurance: One of the most important provisions you can make for your elderly parents is setting up an effective health insurance policy for them. Policies that cover all issues concerning the elderly are imperative.  You may also need to sign up for legal support because some healthcare systems do not cover cases of elderly slip and fall accidents due to third parties. Instead of fretting over medical expenses and other repercussions, hiring an Atlanta slip and fall attorney who will take care of all the legal actions to be taken against the responsible party.

  • Educate them regarding scams: The increasing number of financial frauds and scams is on the rise due to the recession and its financial downturn. This makes the elderly a susceptible target if they’re not aware of the latest digital trends. Make sure you talk to them about the red flags and what to do if they are approached by such individuals in person and via digital means.

Wrapping Up:

When you have the above-mentioned steps in place, taking care of the elderly becomes an efficient responsibility. We hope that this blog helps you fulfill your obligation as children better!

Great tips. After dealing with several elderly in my family, to me, the most important thing is to have their affairs in order. A will or better yet, a trust. If their wishes aren’t known, then other folks can destroy what life they had built up to not only take care of them during extreme illness but also after they have passed away. I am so grateful my mother saw this and all I had to do was follow her wishes and there were no questions.

I think educating our senior parents about scams is an excellent idea since so many scammers prey on the elderly!
