How to Tidy Your Yard in Time for Summer

27 May, 2025 by KatBp Leave a Comment

Is your yard ready for summer? Chances are it isn’t, especially if you have yet to begin working through the mess that gathers over the colder months. As much as you want to start adding bright and pretty flowers, there are other aspects to deal with.

Tidying up your yard is one of the most strenuous tasks that you will experience as a homeowner. There are three main tasks to complete when cleaning up the garden before summer arrives, and this post details each one.

Remove Debris from Your Lawn

The first step to complete when tidying your yard for summer is to clear the debris and clutter that has built up over fall, winter, and possibly spring. This might include things like branches, fallen leaves, and old grass clippings. Whatever it is that you need to clean away, it is best to begin early, as it might take longer than you originally imagined.

There are multiple ways to remove debris from your lawn and the rest of your yard, but you should only do this after moving the lawn. You would only create more to clean up if you mowed after clearing away the clutter. It is best to use a leaf blower and/or a rake when doing this. The leaf blower will clear large areas, while the rake could be used in tighter spots.

When the clutter and debris have been collected, you can either bag it to dispose of as advised by your local guidelines or use the natural waste for compost.

Trim Hedges and Trees

After the debris has been cleared away, you will have a better view of what other work is needed. This might show you that the hedges in your yard, such as around the fence line, will need to be trimmed. There might also be trees that overhang into your yard that should be cut away, especially if you want more sunlight in the garden.

Hedges should be tidied up using hand pruners, shears, or trimmers, and it is best to begin at the bottom and work your way up. A neat appearance can be maintained by leveling off the top of the hedge and having a base that is wider than the top. If you are trimming hedges between March and August, though, you should check for nesting birds before you begin.

The same should be checked when dealing with overhanging trees. This might require a chainsaw, depending on the size of the branches you wish to chop down. You might need a chainsaw sharpener if your tool has become blunt from use the previous summer. It is important to remove damaged, dead, or diseased wood, but you should try to mimic the tree’s natural form to minimize pruning in the future.

Organize the Patio Furniture

With the yard in an overall better condition, it will be clearer where you can place patio furniture. There might be an area in the garden that is a little sun trap, especially with the overhanging trees dealt with, and this could be the perfect place to sit on a summer night. If so, wouldn’t this be the best area to organize your patio furniture?

If you decide on the area, then you must clean the furniture and try to freshen it up as best as you can. How you organize the furniture will depend on your own preference, although you should focus on function and aesthetics.

To conclude, a lot of work is needed to tidy a yard before the summer temperatures hit. As outlined by this post, you should focus on removing debris, trimming hedges and trees, and organizing patio furniture. This will ensure you have a perfect yard to celebrate the sunshine.
