October is National Window Covering Safety Month

8 October, 2018 by KatBp 30 Comments

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Window Covering Safety Council as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

When having little ones around the home, safety is extremely important. I have two daughters, and I always watch out for their safety. Our home is where we are most the time, so I want to make sure we’re always safe in our own home. Many things around the home can be extremely dangerous to kids. One of those dangers, is corded blinds. When my husband and I bought our first home two years ago, we didn’t have any blinds besides curtains, but when we did buy blinds for our home, we went with the cordless blinds. We knew the risks with the corded ones, so we our home to be safer, so we knew we had to go with cordless blinds.

I’m sure by now many of you have heard about some of the horrible experiences some have had with corded blinds. I have a personal connection with this because my youngest was affected by a corded blind once. She was at a family members house, and the string ended up getting wrapped around her ankle, and luckily I was able to quickly remove it before anything happened. It was only there for a few seconds, but she had a bad bruise from it. This is how extremely dangerous these corded blinds really are. In only takes a few seconds for something bad to happen.

October is National Window Covering Safety Month, so I’m highly encouraging everyone to check their window coverings for exposed or dangling cords. These cords can pose a strangulation hazard to infants and young children. I encourage you all to replace them with cordless products. I would install only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords in homes with young children. These cordless options can easily be identified by the Best for Kids™ certification program. The Best for Kids products are currently available at major retailers across the country.

We as parents need to protect our children. I think it’s wonderful that they have a month for window covering safety. I think it’s very important that everyone knows more about this, and not just the parents either. I think everyone should take the time to learn about the risks of corded blinds. Kids stay over at others houses all the time, so it’s important you know about this for the safety of all children.

Did you know that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission calls corded window coverings one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes!? This is why it’s so important to take the time to learn about this.

To aid consumers in making the right choice when selecting window coverings, cordless options can easily be identified by the new Best for Kids™ certification program. This will assist in educating consumers about potential window-cord hazards facing young children and will aid consumers in making the right choice when selecting window coverings.

This is the way we did our window blinds. You can see in the photos above how they are cordless, and they work wonderful! We have a lot of windows in our home, but we made sure to do them all with these blinds. We want our home to be completely safe. We know how dangerous and all the risks with corded blinds, so we made the best decision for our family by using cordless blinds. I never want any child to have to go through anything that happens with those corded blinds. These cordless blinds are a much safer option for everyone.

Whether you may be moving in to a new home, or wanting to make your current home safer, it’s a great idea to look in to getting the cordless blinds for your home. We have them in our home, and couldn’t be happier. They’re so much safer for our children, and we are glad we went with these options. Safety always comes first when it comes to our kids. This is such an important subject. My kids were older before this came to light as a major health risk. I’m so glad we never had any issues.

This is such a helpful reminder for something I don’t normally consider. Taking the time to make your window covers safe and child-proof is worth it!

It’s so important to only use the proper window coverings. We actually had a friend whose child got the cords wrapped around their neck. They were okay, but it made me be sure that ours were safe.

This is a great reminder. We used window covering with cords before not thinking that it was risky. Good thing more people are aware now.

This is such a valuable reminder. When we moved into our first home the prior owners had the drawstring blinds. Well, I had them all removed. I had two small toddlers at the time and wanted no part of it.

This is important in so many ways. I think it is a great reminder to have people in their homes, daycares and schools even make sure they have the proper window coverings. Great information and sometimes we forget those things right in front of us.

I’m sure my cats would have done the same, which is another great reason not to have the corded ones around.

We don’t have any corded blinds that could hurt a young child in our home. I’ve known for a while that it was a hazard. I remember when I was in high school, one of my classmates lost his sister to getting caught up and hanging herself in a corded blind.

This is such an important safety reminder for those with young children in their homes. Accidents and tragedies can happen so quickly, and with things as simple as cords from window coverings. I would mention these cords can even be a hazard for pets, especially cats and small dogs.

Yes, I agree completely. I have two cats as well, which is another reason we don’t like the cords.
