Preparing for Fatherhood: Things To Do When Preparing to be a Dad

31 August, 2022 by KatBp 32 Comments

The feeling of becoming a dad can be exciting and challenging at the same time. You always don’t feel ready for the roles and responsibilities you are about to face, and no matter how much advice you are given by friends or in books you read, you will never be able to cover it all. However, there are some basic steps you need to consider when preparing to be a dad. Communicating and strategizing with your partner on how well to prepare for your kids is crucial. This article will explore things to do when preparing to be a dad.

Discuss Where the Baby Will Be Sleeping

This is one of the most ignored but important considerations that you and your partner should discuss. Without proper planning, you will be stressed after delivery or plan on a badly maintained room. You must research and discuss with your partner to ensure your baby sleeps peacefully. When planning for a room for your kid as recommended, you can look if it will be large enough to fit a crib. You can also consider having a nursery for your kid’s next room.

Consider Building Baby Furniture

Most people procrastinate on making baby furniture to help welcome their baby and ensure they are comfortable. However, this comes to hunt them later when they can’t have an adequate sleep because of the kid. You need to ensure your child’s crib is fine as they might disrupt most of your sleeping schedules.

Buy an Infant Car and a Stroller

You must plan activities to engage your kid when planning to become a dad. This is why you need to consider buying Urban strollers to help you walk with your kid around as you stretch or shop. You also need to ensure you acquire an infant car seat at the hospital and should learn how to strap it out using a baby doll or stuffed animal and put them in the car. This helps remind them and makes the process easy whenever they drive with the kid.

Discuss Labor Divisions with Your Partner

Having a child comes with numerous obligations for both parents. So, manage the situation and ensure everything is well set and the labor defined. The work can be overwhelming, especially the first few weeks after birth. Some crucial tasks you can consider include who will be changing the diapers and who to wake up at night to check the baby. Splitting the tasks helps both of you to have enough time to relax.

Shop for Socks, Hats Onesies

Children are very sensitive to the temperatures surrounding them. This is why it’s important to do the shopping for vital all-weather clothes early to protect them from extreme cold. Ensure you have a good supply of onesies since the baby is growing, and they will be flooded with baby dirt. Another essential piece of clothing to consider is the baby socks which they often lose and get dirty.

Wrapping Up:

When preparing to be a father, ensure you have most things planned and avoid procrastination. Always consider the month your child is born to know how well to prepare.

My husband did build the crib, thank goodness. I wish he had done more though. So many times it seems the mom does the majority of the work and it needs to change.

There is so much to consider and do before your baby arrives. It helps to get all clothing in advance and also to get the room ready if you are preparing a nursery for them.

So many things to do before the baby arrives. It is a good thing we get 9 months to prepare.

This is a great list of things to help prepare! I know I forgot all of the things I would need when I had a baby 8 years after the last!

Knowing where the baby will sleep and who will get up with him/her in the middle of the night is the biggest problem I faced when my kids were newborns. Esp, after I went back to work. I’d end up falling asleep on the couch nursing him and we would sleep until my alarm went off.

It seems so long ago my kids were babies. I miss those times. My boy’s Dad did way more as the kids got older. I think he was scared when they were babies! He is an amazing Dad though!

Labor division is a big one. I didn’t do this and ended up doing most everything where the baby was concerned.
