Why Community Is One of the Secrets to Healthy Aging

A person might eat well, never miss out on a doctor’s appointment, and walk every morning. Still, they might feel unwell, especially if they spend most days alone. Health is not only about what is happening inside the body. Essentially, it is shaped by who checks on us, who we laugh with, and who actually notices when we have had a difficult day.

As people get older, being connected becomes a challenge.

Old age comes with many changes, including friends moving away and families getting busy. This is why building a strong sense of community must be treated as an essential part of healthy aging.

Read on to learn more.

Make Daily Contact Part of Your Routine

What comes to your mind when you think about healthy social connections? You should know that healthy social connections are not about attending big events. Small moments matter way more. Think about having coffee with your neighbor. Think about calling an old friend. Chatting with someone during lunch is also a fine example. All these aspects can give the day a sense of purpose.

For older adults, living somewhere that naturally encourages social interactions can make socializing so much easier. Ventura Place, for instance, is a senior living community that provides opportunities for residents to meet people and build new friendships.

The goal is to have people you can turn to. It is also about having places where you feel welcome.

Choose Fulfilling Relationships

Understandably, not every social connection is healthy. Healthy aging comes down to being selective about the people you spend time with. We recommend choosing relationships that let you give and receive support. Experts often encourage older adults to keep meaningful relationships active. Being useful to others matters. Whenever you are needed for help, advice, and company, you know that you are important to others.

Maintain a Learning Mindset

Believe us when we tell you that learning is way more enjoyable when you do it with someone else.

You have many options to choose from, including:

  • Cooking class
  • Art group
  • Gardening project
  • Book club

The subject you choose does not have to be difficult. The most important part is to have a reason to talk, listen, show up, and simply try something new.

Never Wait Until You Feel Lonely

Never make the mistake of waiting until loneliness hits you hard. Starting early allows you to protect your social life. Mark social activities on your calendar in the same way you would schedule an appointment. You do not need a reason to call someone. Invite a neighbor for coffee. We also recommend volunteering for something that you genuinely care about. If leaving home is really difficult for you, take advantage of technology to stay connected.

Adding Up

It is worth mentioning here that there is no single rule for staying connected as you age. The only important thing is to create a life where you connect with others regularly. Think about activities, places, and people that make you feel valued and comfortable. Healthy aging is essentially about making every day feel worthwhile.
