When Your Hair Needs a Rescue Before the Next Appointment

When Your Hair Needs a Rescue Before the Next Appointment

Choosing Between a Quick Fix and a Full Appointment

So your hair’s a little blah right now and needs some TLC. But your next hair appointment is still a month or two away. What now?

While we always love to see you (obviously), there are some things we can fix in a speedy 30-min appointment (think a fringe trim or dry ends dust-off), and then there are some things that are best tackled during your next cut or colour appointment (like major shape issues or patchy colour with multiple bands). Here’s a cheat sheet on when to opt for a quick visit, and when you should save it for your next appointment!

Blonde and Damaged

Blondes, rejoice: A visit to the Best Hair Salon in Hamilton, OH for a toner is one of the best 30-min rescue visits you can make.

We recommend a blonde refresh when the length of your hair is generally OK and you just need to dial back some of the brassiness (especially noticeable around your face), clean up some dry ends, and generally get back that gorgeous, fresh-from-the-salon, blondness.

Schedule a rescue visit for:

  • that bit of blonde colour that’s gotten a bit brassy after spending time outdoors in Hamilton. You need to head out of town this weekend and want to tone down some of the brassiness before you hop on the plane.
  • dull blonde hair after excessive heat tool use

Book a regular visit instead for:

  • dull blonde hair that has varying tone in it (i.e. goldier in some places, more ashy in others, some more pale, etc)
  • damaged hair that has been previously lightened

Blonde Rescue Dos and Don’ts

DO let us know where the warmth is the strongest – around your roots, in your ponytail lengths, in your temples, etc. It’s easy to walk in and just say my hair is brassy and I want it cooler but more specifics help us dial in that perfect blonde tone for you!

DON’T ignore really patchy colour or signs of damage. If you can still see dark spots/bands in your hair from previously coloured hair, or your hair feels like it stretches when it’s wet (especially towards the ends), come in for a chat so we can look at options for getting the most out of your blonde colour.

Grey Touch-Ups Between Colour Visits

Colour rescue visits are the perfect fix when your colour’s generally OK but those pesky greys are peeking through (worth a skim of https://scientificamerican.com/article/why-does-hair-turn-gray) – particularly in your parting and around your hairline. It’s especially noticeable if you part your hair in a straight line, that little silver stripe! Or if your colour is darker and your roots are much lighter, creating a shadow effect around your ears. Bonus: dry shampoo enhances the effect. Yuck!

Schedule a rescue visit for:

  • grey touch ups (if you coloured your whole head previously but just need the roots attended to, especially around the parting and hairline)

Book a regular visit instead for:

  • dull blonde hair that has varying tone in it (i.e. goldier in some places, more ashy in others, some more pale, etc)

Colour Rescue Dos and Don’ts

DO tell us what colour your hair was when we last coloured it! If we coloured your hair blonde last time, but it’s grown out patchily into a coppery colour in the back with an ashy tone in the front, painting your roots blonde won’t blend nicely with the lengths.

What Can a Quick Curl or Layer Fix?

Curly and layered hairstyles

Schedule a rescue visit for:

  • a fringe trim, whether your bangs are starting to cross your eyes or if it’s grown out to that awkward phase where half your fringe goes one way and the rest creates pointy triangles in the opposite direction!
  • to nip away a few errant pieces around your jaw that won’t behave in your fancy work ponytail or always get caught in your favourite scarf (dry ends can always be nipped during a colour refresh as well)
  • to update the shape around your face if you want to soften a cheekbone-defying bend, lengthen/shorten your wispy pieces, etc

Book a regular visit instead for:

  • when multiple layers aren’t sitting right, ie: bangs + temple wisps + back layers, etc

Preparing for Your Rescue Visit

Like with any other kind of haircut, it helps to come into your rescue visit with a game-plan of sorts! Think about: what’s bugging you about your hair? Do you want to tone down the yellowy tone in the front of your hair? Show some love to those pesque grey hairs in your parting? Give your overgrown bangs a trim? Refresh the shape around your face? Dust off those scarf-snagging dry ends?

Take some pics of your hair (daylight, near the window pics work best). Show them to us in the chair or send them over to us ahead of time (no dim hallway preview pics, please!). And lastly, call us and schedule that appointment. Give us an idea of what’s going on with your hair and double-check with us that there is enough time during an available appointment to tackle what you have in mind!
